UPDATE TO EVENT INFORMATION: The Martin Luther King Commemoration Committee (MLKCC) regrets to announce that due to a sudden illness, Daljit Dhaliwal, the advertised keynote speaker for the MLK Evening Lecture on Thursday, 1/21 at 7pm will not be available. We all wish her a speedy recovery.
In her stead, we are extremely pleased that Willamette University professor of law Robin Morris Collin has kindly consented to share her considerable talents with us as Thursday's featured speaker. Professor Collin is a widely respected scholar and author whose numerous awards include a Campus Compact recognition for Civic Engagement in Sustainability.

WHAT: Evening Lecture and performance shapes up as the traditional marquee event of the week featuring our distinguished keynote speaker, Public Broadcasting anchorwoman, Daljit Dhaliwal. Highlighting Dr. Kings international pedigree, this lecture will also chronicle his many influences and impact on people and nations beyond the US. A choral and music performance will add luster to the evening's proceedings.

PSU Receives Prestigious Awards

Portland State University has been awarded the prestigious 2010 CHEA Award for Outstanding Institutional Practice in Student Learning Outcomes by The Council for Higher Education Accreditation. PSU will receive this award later this month at the 2010 CHEA Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. For more information, visit the PSU website.

In addition, Portland State University and PAE Consulting Engineers have won Project of the Year, the American Council of Engineering Companies of Oregon's top award, for last year's remodel of Shattuck Hall. PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland State women's soccer team was crowned the Big Sky regular season champion after Northern Colorado upset Northern Arizona, 4-0, in Greeley, Colo. It is the Vikings second Big Sky Championship since joining the conference in 1997. The Viks will now host the Big Sky Championship Nov. 6 and 8.

The tournament semifinals will begin Nov. 6 at 1:30 p.m., with seed No. 3 versus seed No. 2 and the second semifinal will begin at 4 p.m., with the No. 4 team versus the host Vikings. After a day of rest Saturday, the winner of both matches will square off for a automatic berth for the NCAA Tournament at 11 a.m. All matches will be played at PCC - Rock Creek.

I'm blogging here...

The University of Oregon football team has a bye. Oregon State has a bye. That means
Jeremiah Masoli and Jacquizz Rodgers are taking the week off. It also means we need
to deal with the issue of Portland State University.

Also, how this relates to the Blazers buzz this week.

PSU has a larger enrollment than any other institution in the state. It will hand out more
degrees than Oregon or Oregon State next spring. It has a solid research budget. And
PSU's economic impact to the state is estimated to be $1.1 billion annually.

Stay with me here...

Because tuition on the campus is still affordable by college standards ($5,700 annually
for in-state students). And the campus is gorgeous. And based on the statistics that
show an astounding number of you have been in a classroom on the campus, it's clear
that either you took a class at PSU or someone you know (and love?) did.

I only bring this up because Portland State is playing a home football game on Saturday
against Northern Arizona. And PSU will start Connor Kavanaugh (Lincoln HS) at
quarterback. And if you sift through the team roster, you'll find a large number of athletes
who played prep football at area high schools.

Note to you: This is your team.

We spent a lot of time this week talking about the memories you made as a kid at
Memorial Coliseum. And it took you right back to your parents living room on
Wednesday night when Bill Schonely moved back behind the play-by-play microphone
to call Brandon Roy, Greg Oden and company. It was a lot of fun even though the
Blazers lost. A good deal of my radio show on Wednesday and Thursday was spent
taking calls from people who shared rich and amazing memories, and by others, who
made new memories by sharing a transistor radio with their child this week --- one ear
bud for dad, one ear bud for son.

I had glassy eyes through a lot of those stories.

I only bring this up because you have an unimpeded opportunity to give your hometown
team a chance on Saturday at PGE Park --- Kickoff is 1 p.m.

You can buy a ticket for as little as $10. Buy them online or buy them at the ticket office
on game day. Yes, full disclosure, the Bald Faced Truth Foundation is a part of the
festivities. This means children who can't afford to play sports or rent musical
instruments or go on a field trip due to school budget cuts will get help on Saturday, too.

But beyond that, I'm looking at 6,000-plus in average attendance this season, and I'm
seeing your obvious connection with this campus, and I'm wondering if this weekend's
game isn't a wonderful opportunity for you to get inside the stadium and make a memory
with your family and friends.

I was born in Oregon, but grew up in California. And some of the best memories I have
as a kid were from going to San Jose State football games in the late 1970s and early
1980s. Tickets were cheap. Attendance was spotty. Frankly, times weren't great and it
was all we could afford. The Spartans weren't always good, but Jack Elway was the
coach, and like Jerry Glanville, he was never boring. Most of all, though, I can remember
playing catch with my father in the parking lot prior to the games, and cheering alongside
my siblings and mom until we were all hoarse.

Portland State is your team.

It's a reflection of your community.

PORTLAND — Intel has brought 28 top science students from Vietnam to Portland State University for two years of all-expense-paid engineering studies.

The students have agreed to work at Intel’s plant near Ho Chi Minh City for at least three years after graduating.

Portland State has close ties with Intel and is in its third year of trying to strengthen ties with Vietnam.

Intel said about 400 applied for the 28 slots.

Intel spokesman Bill MacKenzie said Portland State’s relationship with the Vietnamese university system was an important factor in choosing PSU for the $2 million scholarship program.

Santa Clara-based Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) will sponsor the $2 million program that helps train Vietnamese engineering students in Portland. The students could eventually hold high-level positions at Intel’s largest global assembly and test site, being built in Ho Chi Minh City.

The money, which averages out to more than $80,000 per student, will cover the full cost of summer preparation coursework, two academic years of out-of-state tuition, room and board and a monthly stipend.

The Vietnamese students will essentially complete the last two academic years of their engineering degree at PSU before returning to Vietnam in June 2011.

For Fall 2009 enrollment, PSU does not require a letter of intent nor a tuition deposit. We know you are attending PSU when you attend an Orientation: Advising and Registration Day.

My name is Brooke and I am a junior at Portland State. I am currently double majoring in Criminal Justice and Psychology. I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. I have been to college in New York, Hollywood and Chicago. I have graduated from a small Theatre academy. I chose to come to Portland State for all the different and diverse opportunities that they offer. They also have a great Criminal Justice Program. Since coming to Portland State I have been involved in many different activities. I have been on the rowing team, the women’s rugby team; I am currently the president of Phi Sigma Sigma, and a member of the Rec Clubs Council. I work in the Campus Visits office and the Outdoor Program at Portland State.

Our staff just returned from a great trip to Hawaii to meet with prospective and admitted students and their families. Throughout the week, we met with students in their high schools, had a Reception on May 8 and held Orientation on May 9.

"It was a very busy trip for me! Alot of flying and driving!! I got to talk to alot of great students and counselors from all the islands. I don't think I can eat anymore macadamia nuts!"

Schantz, a third-team Associated Press All-American, led the Vikings with 115 tackles, had 15 tackles for loss and nine pass breakups in 2008. He is the third Viking linebacker in as many years to join an NFL team (Jordan Senn, Colts, 2008; Adam Hayward, Buccaneers, 2007)... also signing free agent contracts were cornerback Reggie Jones and kicker/punter Danny Urrego. Jones signed with the New Orleans Saints. He had 38 tackles, four interceptions, two fumble recoveries and seven pass breakups in 2008. Urrego signed with the Buffalo Bills. He was 15-23 on field goals in 2008 and averaged 40.5 yards per punt for the Vikings. three have signed free agent contracts. PSU students take first place

Eleven of our students attended this year's regional National Student Advertising Competition. They submitted plans for developing a strategic communication plan for
the Century Council, an organization created to help promote responsible drinking among college students and eliminate underage drinking and drunk driving.

It is with great pride that we announce to you that the PSU team took
1st Place!

The judges were very impressed by both the creativity and continuity of the campaign plans book and the engagement and flow of the presentation/pitch. The team was able to demonstrate that PSU SBA's students have the ability to develop strategy for more than just
traditional goods and services; the team excelled at promoting a socially responsible idea, something that competing teams from J-Schools and Communication Schools no doubt consider their area of expertise.

During the first week of June the team will compete nationally in
Arlington, VA against 15 of the best advertising teams across the
country. Please wish them well as they reach for national gold.

Alexis is majoring in Sociology, minoring in Sexuality, Gender and Queer Studies and French. She spent the 07'–08' school year studying abroad in Paris, practicing her French in a theater class at the Sorbonne. Her hometown is Olympia, Washington. She chose Portland State because she liked the city, and the University Studies program (she didn't want to take science courses). She is interested in teaching communities, especially teenagers, about dating violence and safe relating. At PSU, She has been involved in choir, theater productions, student ambassadors, orientations and work-study in the advising office. Alexis loves tea, musical theater, learning and bicycling.

While our regular Orientation sessions have now concluded, we do have mini-sessions scheduled prior to Winter term for those who did not make a previously scheduled Orientation program. We are calling these sessions Advising 411.

Those attending Advising 411 will obtain a free copy of the Portland State course catalog & student handbook; learn about your academic requirements; and learn about campus resources. You may reserve your spot in a session by going online to www.pdx.edu/orientation and having your student ID number handy. Your student ID number can be found on your letter of admission to Portland State.

If you cannot locate the number or have not yet received your admission letter, please call 503-725-5555 for assistance scheduling your Advising 411 session. What a great trip in Southern California! I started in San Diego and ended in the High Desert! I am from Riverside, so this was a trip back home and a chance to connect with the students from high schools that had always been my rivals!

While I was there I visited 16 schools and saw over 100 students and I got to meet Mickey Mouse! Overall it was great to be home and I look forward to seeing you all again in the Spring, if not sooner, up here at Portland State!

Greetings from San Francisco! I'm Dave Kobzina, the Admissions Counselor who works with students in Northern California. I have had a wonderful time meeting with students all across the Bay Area. It doesn't hurt that my family lives nearby, so the home cooking is always appreciated. I will say the weather between San Francisco is very similar to Portland, as is the warmth and diversity of its population. What a great trip to Alaska! I talked to so many wonderful students and families from all over the state. I enjoyed each conversation and got to spend time in the warmer temperatures of Anchorage and the freezing temperatures of Fairbanks! Unfortunately, I did not get to see any moose or bears, but I did get a chance to drive on the freezing roads, good thing I had a truck with 4WD! I also enjoyed spending time with students during my high school visits and it gave me a chance to see your schools and your great career centers! Keep up the good work in Alaska and thanks for showing me a great time while I was there!

Now I'm off to sunny San Diego, CA to warm up!

Notable Alumni

We’ve got an interesting blog for today – our first look at some of PSU’s most notable alumni – from a basketball player to a troubled rock musician…these stars, athletes, and successful professionals were once college students just like you!

The name Carolyn Davidson may not sound familiar, but you’d certainly recognize her artwork. Davidson, while studying at Portland State University in 1971, created a small “swoosh” design that caught the eye of Phil Knight – a professor in PSU’s Accounting department at the time. Knight offered Davidson $35 for use of the swoosh logo, which later became the insignia for Nike, Inc. Davidson worked for Knight’s company for multiple years, before retiring to focus on hobbies and volunteer work.

Portland State University was also home to Mike Richardson, who serves as the current president of Dark Horse Comics. Dark Horse publishes such popular comics and graphic novels as 300, Sin City, Æon Flux, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and many, many more! Richardson is also president of Dark Horse Entertainment, the production company that created the action-adventure films Mystery Men, The Mask, and Hellboy.

She’s been called “the most controversial woman in the history of rock”, but before she took to the stage, Courtney Love was sitting through classes at Portland State University. Although Love didn’t graduate from PSU, she did enroll in classes while living in the Portland area.

Basketball fans will recognize this one: Ime Udoka, a current team member of the San Antonio Spurs, was once a star on PSU’s basketball team (note: Udoka graduated from nearby Jefferson High School). Udoka’s former teams include both the New York Knicks and Portland’s very own Trail Blazers.

Portland State University offers a variety of study abroad programs for students interested in learning about other regions of the world. One of our Orientation Leaders, Alexis, is currently taking advantage of this great opportunity – she’s spending an entire year living and studying in France. Take a look at the latest adventures Alexis has had while studying abroad:

After finals were over, my friends and I took a trip to Athens.

For two of the nights, my friends and I slept at the hostel, Athens Backpackers. There was a woman, Sindy, who snored amazingly loud! It was intense. I think some of thegirls in the room called her "the railroad."…I thought it sounded more tractor-ish. Because of the snoring, I didn’t sleep well the first night. I was ready the second night.

We had the opportunity to travel to Delphi with the hostel. They have a tour guide, Mike, that just recently moved to Greece. He spoke both English and Greek and had some great stories! On the way back from Delphi, we got stuck in traffic. Our tour guide, Mike, told us that he was in Greece ten years ago and that was before they were enforcing traffic laws. At first, the roads seemed dangerous…but our tour guide didn’t have any problem driving around. I guess it’s like New York - once you drive there you become more aware while driving and just better at it. It must be the same in Europe.

This is a great time to take a campus tour! While you may be out of school soon, we will still be open all throughout winter break. We are closed only on a couple of days - please see our website for specific dates.

We offer daily campus tours at 10:30 a.m. Your visit begins with an Admissions presentation from one of our Admissions Counselors followed by the campus tour, led by a current Portland State student.

We enjoyed meeting 400+ students at the Bridges visitation program on November 29th. We hope that you enjoyed your time on the PSU campus and that we'll see you again soon.

Portland State Says "Aloha"

I just got back from Hawaii and it was a great trip. I talked to lots of different students and high school counselors from Oahu, Kauai, Maui, and the Big Island.

The Top Three Questions that students had:
1. Are we a WUE school?....and the answer is YES!
2. Can we get the same rice in Oregon as in Hawaii?.....and the answer is at certain stores, YES!
3. How is our football team doing now that we have UH's old football coach?....and the answer is "we're in a transition period".

I had lots of fun and I'm looking forward to receiving future questions from students and parents. For those students who will be admitted, I can't wait to see you at Orientation on May 3, 2008 in Honolulu and then on campus in the fall.

Preview Day

Thank you to everyone who attended Preview Day 2007. It was a great event and we enjoyed meeting all of you. This is one of our favorite annual events and you made it one of our best Preview Day's ever.

We met 726 students and their families attended Preview Day, including families from Oregon, Washington, Colorado, California, Nevada, Utah, Ohio, Illinois, Idaho, and Montana.

We would like to extend a special thank you to our student volunteers. They spent their Saturday with us to share with you their PSU experience and we're so thankful to them for volunteering their time.

We hope to see you on campus again soon!
